HS2 Phase 2A update: Design refinement to the South of Crewe

HS2 Limited have announced a consultation is now open for amendments to the route for three sections south of Crewe. Two further Consultations have opened for the working draft Environmental Impact Assessment and Equality Impact Assessment reports for Phase 2A.

HS2 Limited have confirmed that they are continuing to work on the design alongside the consultations. It is proposed that the full route will be published when the Hybrid Bill is deposited into Parliament in 2017. The continuing design work includes; costings, environmental impacts and technical factors such as the preferred vertical alignment.

The three changes proposed are as follows:

  • South of Crewe – to extend the Crewe tunnel south by approximately 2100m and re-site the tunnel portal south of the A500 and Weston Lane
  • South of Crewe – to move the spur lines that connect HS2 to the West Coast Mainline further south and to extend the length
  • Near Stone – to build a temporary construction facility, between HS2 and the M6

The consultation is open for all of those who would be effected by the refinements and closes on 7th November 2016. The plans and proposals are detailed online and those owners/ occupiers effected can respond online or via free post.

Tony Rimmer of Rostons stated “It has been well publicised that the boss of HS2 has resigned this week, casting rumours that the scheme will not be moving forward under the new regime. It is clear that these amendments to the route are being considered to be deposited into the Hybrid bill next year. The route to the north of Crewe should be announced later this autumn, this announcement provides some confidence that the scheme is moving forward”.
